Decimus Burton (1800-1881)

Decimus Burton, the son of a London builder, became a recognised architect at an early age - his designs for the Colosseum in Regent's Park were accepted when he was only 23. He later designed the buildings for the zoological gardens, also in Regent's Park, and collaborated with Joseph Paxton on the Great Stove at Chatsworth, the Duke of Devonshire's Estate in Deryshire.

At Kew, Burton was responsible for the design of the Palm House, in collaboration with the iron-founder Richard Turner, and later for the Temperate House. He also designed the Broad Walk, and reconstructed the Temple of Aeolus.
