Seasonal Highlights at Wakehurst

As the seasons change, so does the very nature of Wakehurst Place. In the grounds and in the glasshouses, thousands of plants progress through their annual cycles, flowering, fruiting, growing, resting. From bluebells to autumn colour; from native wildflowers to exotic orchids, there are plants to be seen at their glorious best all year long.

Please note that flowerings can vary by some three to four weeks, depending on climatic conditions. Check the News pages to see what's at its best and where it is.

CrocusSpring

Spring bulbs and wildflowers in woodland settings; bright bedding in walled gardens; magnolias and pieris putting on their shows, and rhododendrons almost everywhere - Wakehurst Place grows more glorious throughout spring.

SunflowerSummer

There's colour everywhere, from pastel cottage colours, through Mediterranean themes and mixed herbaceous plantings, to dramatic slashes of colour from Japan. Add native wildflowers and orchids and summer has arrived.

MushroomAutumn

Now is when Wakehurst's trees show their magic, with glowing berries and a riot of colourful foliage. The herbaceous borders last well and sculptural seed heads add their drama.

HollyWinter

The dogwoods and willows, heathers and cyclamens make the Winter Garden a 'must', as are Westwood Valley with its highly-perfumed daphnes and Bethlehem Wood's National Collection of glorious birches.
