Kew to phase out plastic shopping bags

June 2008

recycled paper bags in Kews shops

In line with Kew’s environmental stance, this summer we will be phasing out the use of plastic shopping bags at our two gift shops at Kew Gardens and from the gift shop at Wakehurst Place.

Instead, customers will be offered a paper bag made from recycled post-consumer waste which can, in turn, be re-used and recycled.

Initially, these bags will be free to customers.

This move coincides with an initiative by retailers in nearby Kew Village (www.greenerkew.org) which will see shops around Kew Gardens Station replacing their stocks of plastic bags with biodegradable cornstarch bags, paper bags and re-usable bags from 1 July 2008.
