Bee Garden
No English garden is complete without its bees and Kew is no exception.
Developed in 1993, the Bee Garden has three styles of beehive, from
simple logs and basketware skeps, to modern wooden hives that grow
taller as more 'supers' (extra layers) are inserted as the honeycombs
form inside them. Two colonies had new queens flown in from New
Zealand where bees are traditionally quite docile.
The Bee Garden is full of flowers popular with the bees and shows
the important interaction between plants and insects. Without the
pollinators, plants would not set seed and our food supplies would
dwindle rapidly. Continue the tour
