The Sir Joseph Banks Centre for Economic Botany
Not open to the public, this building is named after Sir Joseph
Banks (1743-1820) who was the unofficial director of Kew before
it became a public garden. Built on a three hectare site next to
the river and opened in 1990, it was designed to blend into the
Gardens. It is one of the largest earth-covered complexes built
in Britain; the surrounding soil provides insulation and conserves
energy.
It houses our Economic Botany Collections, which comprise over
76,000 specimens of economically important plants and their products. Continue the tour
