Crocus Carpet & Temple of Bellona

The crocus carpet - 2 million strong!

Reader's Digest sponsored the carpet of 1.6 million crocuses near the Temple of Bellona on its 50th anniversary in 1987. The number represented their readership at that time. They have since

funded the planting of 700,000 new corms completed in 2003.
In early spring, from February onwards, visitors are taken aback by what can only be described as the sheer quantity of beauty brought about by this generous - in every sense of the word - planting.

Temple of Bellona

The Temple of Bellona is named after the Roman goddess of war. Behind its Doric facade is a room decorated with plaques bearing the names of British and Hanoverian regiments which distinguished themselves in the Seven Years' War (1756-63).
