Flower anatomy

The floral anatomy research programme overlaps with both research on both dicotyledons and monocotyledons, although the emphasis is on monocot systematics, especially in lilies and their relatives. In this group, the lack of sufficient variables in flower structure makes micromorphological characters particularly significant. We analyse characters such as pollen development, ovule structure and style anatomy using both light and electron microscopy. In critical analyses of monocot characters we work closely with colleagues from other sections of the organisation, and elsewhere.
